UTV Ireland goes live tonight

utv-irelandLaunch Night. And a very Happy New Year to you. And a very Happy New Year from everyone here at UTV Ireland. At 19.25 this evening a new channel for Ireland will go live.
UTV Ireland will launch with a fabulous montage of pictures from around the country with programmes and personalities that I hope will make UTV Ireland your channel of choice for first class entertainment and news. “Welcome to UTV Ireland”.

If you’ve missed the test transmissions and live in the Republic of Ireland, you can find the service on Sky at 116, Saorview channel 6, UPC at 110 and on eVision at 108. The UTV Player is on our website utv.ie and the Player App in the Apple and Android stores. Plus there’s a Facebook page and Twitter feed @UTVIreland.

As well as Emmerdale and Coronation Street, the channel has exclusive access to all ITV Studios content made for ITV’s main channel and we’re acquiring some of the world’s best content from other producers and distributors. Not to mention our own home productions. Pat Kenny is on air tonight at 20.30 and on Monday’s at 20.00 we have Rare Breed: A Farming Year, which looks at the lives of farmers across the island for the next 12 weeks.

Plus there is a new news and current affairs service called Ireland Live. Unmissable news at 18.30 and unmissable analysis at 22.00 – both programmes every weekday night from Monday 5th January.

There’ll be more about the news in a new blog from me coming on Monday.

During the last year a great deal has been done to get the station on air. Teams in Dublin and at UTV Media’s HQ in Belfast have been working hard to deliver the new station on time for today.

Miles and miles of cable and infrastructure have been laid, studios built, new satellite systems installed. We’ve linked Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Galway and Belfast with our own communications links called the U-Net which has been designed and built in record time with the ability to move pictures and data around the island.

We’ve employed more than 100 highly skilled people to create a brand new channel – everything from finance to editing, sales to journalism, graphics to scheduling, cameras to HR, transmission and communications. We have the key people to build from launch to become a real force in the creative industries across Ireland, and with UTV in Northern Ireland delivering some of the biggest audience figures in the industry for home produced programming and news, we’ve got a great launch-pad to begin the journey which goes live in a matter of hours.

I want to say a huge thank you to everyone at UTV who has been involved. A Herculean effort all round!

Also thank you to our partners, contractors, stakeholders and supporters who’ve been with us on the journey and have made a huge contribution to getting us on air.

And last – but of course not least, to our advertisers and our audience. Thanks for joining us on this exciting new journey. We hope you enjoy it.

UTV Ireland – from 19.25 tonight – first up will be an hour Emmerdale special – Unmissable.
