The government is currently writing a new charter for how the BBC is run. We’ve already lost BBC Three and sports like Formula 1 and the Olympics to funding cuts. We can’t risk losing more. Don’t let the BBC become a memory!
What’s happening?
The BBC Charter is being reviewed. This is a chance to build the BBC for the future. But there is also a danger that it could become the beginning of the end of the BBC we all know and love. We believe the Prime Minister and the Government need to listen to the views of the British people as they decide the BBC’s future.
We believe the BBC should be:
1. BRITAIN’S VOICE
It is in the interest of the UK and all its citizens that the BBC remains the top global broadcaster promoting British culture and values throughout the world. Government must back the BBC not bind it.
2. INFORMATIVE & ENTERTAINING
The core principle of public service broadcasting and the mission of the BBC to inform, educate and entertain
3. EMPOWERED
The BBC gives us much more than it takes. The licence fee system where we as citizens jointly pay for the BBC should remain in place. The Licence fee should be increased at least in line with inflation in the current Charter review.
4. INDEPENDENT
The BBC must remain independent and free of political commercial influence.
5. A SHOWCASE FOR BRITAIN
The BBC should continue to support understanding across our nations by showcasing the talents of all.
6. AT THE FOREFRONT
The BBC should be able to use new technologies and platforms to ensure its content reaches young and global audiences in a cost effective way.
