IPTV GlobeThere are many sites advertising IPTV services for a price. There are however ways to watch streaming channels for free, though it may involve a bit of searching for working links and installing some free software on your computer (VLC Player) or purchasing an Android TV box.

Of course a dedicated TV box connected to your TV is going to be a far better option than always having to use your computer.
There are many devices available on the market, though an Android TV is probably the best option for watching IPTV for free, there are many free TV apps available and XBMC.

Those wanting to use Apple, should note that not all apps will allow you to use Airplay through an Apple TV.
See TV & Radio on Apple iOS.

There is also an app called Smart IPTV available on LG and Samsung Smart TVs, though it is not free and all streams will have to be added by the viewer.
Another app Simple Smart IPTV is also available on LG TVs.

How IPTV Works

Internet Protocol television (IPTV) is a system through which television services are delivered using the Internet protocol suite over a packet-switched network such as a LAN or the Internet, instead of being delivered through traditional terrestrial, satellite signal, and cable television formats. Unlike downloaded media, IPTV offers the ability to stream the media in smaller batches, directly from the source. As a result, a client media player can begin playing the data (such as a movie) before the entire file has been transmitted. This is known as streaming media.

IPTV services may be classified into three main groups:
Live television, with or without interactivity related to the current TV show;
Time-shifted television: catch-up TV (replays a TV show that was broadcast hours or days ago), start-over TV (replays the current TV show from its beginning);
Video on demand (VOD): browse a catalog of videos, not related to TV programming.

IPTV is distinguished from Internet television by its ongoing standardization process (e.g., European Telecommunications Standards Institute) and preferential deployment scenarios in subscriber-based telecommunications networks with high-speed access channels into end-user premises via set-top boxes or other customer-premises equipment.

IPTV Protocols
IPTV covers both live TV (multicast) as well as stored video-on-demand/VoD (unicast). Playback requires a broadband device connected to either a fixed or wireless IP network in the form of either a standalone personal computer or limited embedded OS device such as a smartphone, touch screen tablet, game console, connected TV or set-top box.

Video compression is provided by either a H.263 or H.264 derived codec, audio compressed via a MDCT based codec and then encapsulated in either an MPEG transport stream or RTP packets or Flash Video packets for live or VoD streaming. IP multicasting allows for live data to be sent to multiple receivers using a single multicast group address. H.264/MPEG-4 AVC is commonly used for internet streaming over higher bit rate standards such as H.261 and H.263 which were more designed for ISDN video conferencing.

H.262/MPEG-1/2 is generally not used as the bandwidth required would quite easily saturate a network which is why they are only used in single link broadcast or storage applications.

M3U Playlist

M3U PlaylistM3U is a file format that contains multimedia playlists. It was originally designed for audio files, such as MP3, though it is often used to point to play video file lists of live TV streams.
An M3U file is a plain text file that specifies the locations of one or more media files. The file is saved with the “M3U” or “m3u” file name extension.
If an m3u file is edited with a text editor, it must be saved in the Windows-1252 format, which is a superset of ASCII. “m3u” files properly use the Latin-1 character set.

Some M3U files may already use UTF-8 character encoding. However, M3U files may also use other character encoding standards. Therefore, the M3U8 extension is used to explicitly state that UTF-8 character encoding is used.

Each entry carries one specification, the specification would in the case of IPTV be a URL. These can come in a variety of forms, not all start with http and may be one of the following:  (Hyper Text Transfer Proticol)

rtmp:// (Real Time Messaging Protocol)

mms:// (Microsoft Media Server)

rtsp:// (Real Time Streaming Protocol)

#EXTM3U (File header). This is  the format descriptor, (or Extended M3U as it can be called). It is always on the first line of the playlist.

#EXTINF (Channel name). #EXTINF:-1,BBC World News (not an actual feed)

A file with the M3U8 file extension is a UTF-8 Encoded Playlist file.
The Unicode version of “m3u” is “m3u8”, which uses UTF-8 Unicode characters. “m3u” and “m3u8” files are the basis for the HTTP Live Streaming format used by Apple to stream video to iOS devices.

Creating Groups in m3u Playlists
A playlist can easily be divided in to groups such as News, Music, UK TV, this makes finding channels much easier.
To add a group, add the following to the first channel in your group:
#EXTINF:1 group-title=”NEWS”,BBC World News
