Sky LogoSky is planning to expand its presence in more European markets, kicking off with the launch of a version of its Now TV online service in Spain, according to a report by the Sunday Telegraph.

According to the paper, Sky sees the launch of Now TV in Spain, where the service is expected be offered for €10 a month, as the first phase in a wider plan to take on the likes of Netflix and Amazon across Europe.

The paper reports that Sky has been secretly planning the move for over a year, with the aim of launching in further European markets where it does not already have a satellite pay TV operation if the Spanish venture is successful.

Following Netflix’s expansion into the Spanish market at the start of this year, Amazon is expected to launch its SVoD service in the market, along with launches in France and Italy, soon, according to reports.

HBO also reportedly plans to launch its HBO Now service in the Spanish market before the end of this year, running down third-party content deals to reserve content for its own service.

Sky has been seeking to expand its appeal in markets where it also offers a mainstream pay TV service. Following its launch of Now TV in the UK, the company has expanded the concept to Italy and Germany.

Sky recently re-launched its online TV service in Germany. The service, now dubbed Sky Ticket, provides entertainment, sports and movie content for a set of fixed per-month fees without the need for an ongoing subscription. A similar service is available in Italy.
