Ofcom invites applications for Suffolk DAB

Ofcom has advertised a new local radio multiplex to provide DAB digital radio stations in Suffolk.
Ofcom will assess applications to run the new multiplex on Frequency Block 10C against specified criteria, including the proposed coverage area, timetable for launch and how services will broaden choice and cater to local tastes and interests.

Ofcom will award the Suffolk multiplex licence to the applicant it considers best meets the criteria, in what is known as a ‘beauty contest’.
As ever, 128kbits/sec is reserved to the BBC for the broadcasting in digital form of its local radio service, BBC Radio Suffolk.

Ford Ennals, CEO of Digital Radio UK welcomed the advert: “This is good news for radio listeners in the Suffolk area who will soon be able to get their favourite local stations on DAB for the first time.”

Helen Boaden Director of BBC Radio, says: “It is fantastic that more listeners will be able to enjoy the full range of BBC services. Extending DAB coverage is an important part of building a digital future for radio.”

The closing date for applications is 11 June 2015 and Ofcom hopes to award the licence as soon as practicable.
