New Era for Digital UK

As of today, Digital UK and multiplex operator company DMOL are merged into one organisation, chaired by former BBC chief operating officer Caroline Thomson.
As announced in November, Caroline Thomson will earn £50,000 a year for the two-day-a-week role.
With digital switchover complete, the new combined organisation is now responsible for keeping viewers informed of forthcoming 4G-related clearance retunes affecting Freeview during 2013, but will not be responsible for any interference issues created by 4G services transmitted on former TV frequencies. A new company set up by the 4G mobile operators will take over that responsibility later this year. Digital UK will also provide general consumer support for Freeview viewers.
Meanwhile, the organisation will also be responsible for managing the infrastructure behind digital terrestrial TV broadcasts, including the day-to-day operation of the Freeview Electronic Programme Guide (EPG).

Owned by the BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Arqiva, the “new” Digital UK will be responsible for allocating channel numbers for new services joining Freeview. Its predecessor DMOL had great difficulty in implementing a channel reshuffle last autumn, following appeals by two broadcasters refusing to move channel numbers. In the end channel numbers were reshuffled in two stages during September and October 2012, with proposed changes to news and children’s Freeview channel numbers being deferred to a later date; until the general entertainment section of the EPG is almost full.
Online, the DMOL website has now closed, redirecting users to www.digitaluk.co.uk/industry .
The consumer facing website www.digitaluk.co.uk remains, but refocused solely on Freeview support and retuning advice.
