Waoo TV & Radio

Waoo offers broadband, TV, and radio through fiber optic cables, the information on this page is based upon services through Fibia in Copenhagen and the Capital Region (Region hovedstaden). Services and availability may vary in other areas of Denmark.
Please note: This is an ongoing project, any assistance, information or advice would be greatly appreciated, whether you are are a customer of Waoo, YouSee or any other provider of IPTV through fiber optic cable.

On Waoo via fiber optic cable, TV and radio services are not transmitted using DVB-C, the CATV socket is in most areas disabled, there is no option to enable this output in the router. If there is any way of doing this please let me know.
Channels are streamed through a TV Ethernet port (there are two), the basic channels are unencrypted, the remainder are, so they can not be viewed on any other device. All radio stations on Waoo are free-to-air and use a high bitrate providing excellent sound quality.
IPTV set-top boxes use a GUID, which is 32 characters long. Similar to a MAC address which only has 12 characters. If the GUID and MAC address does not match, no unencrypted stream.
Channels are not constantly streamed and are only available when selected through the Waoo TV box. Connect the other TV port to your computer via the Ethernet port, you can then use a Wi-Fi connection for Internet access.

TV & Radio Streams

TV channels can be split in to free-to-air and encrypted, all of DR’s channels are free along with TV2 Regions, though not TV2 Danmark. Streams are sent to the end user by request (when you choose a certain channel), the command is sent to the host (Waoo). The host does after a certain length of time send a confirmation request to the TV box to see if the channel is still required.
All streams are sent using UDP (User Datagram Protocol), streams start with udp://@ followed by the stream. So DR1 would be something like udp://@244.138.48.207:5501.
There are two streams, most channels seem to be on the one ending in 48, the other ends in 7.
The stream can be split into three parts:

  • User Datagram Protocol (UDP)
  • Destination IP (IP address for the channel, last segment marked in red is the channel number or id)
  • Port (DST Port)

Streams are either .48 or .7, so:
DR1 would be udp://@244.138.48.207:5501
TV2 Zulu would be udp://@244.138.7.96:5501

Technical note for NRK Radio (from Norway)
NRK radio stations use the AAC extension SBR. Spectral Band Replication (SBR) is a technology used to enhance audio or speech codecs, especially at low bitrates and is based on harmonic redundancy in the frequency domain. In VLC Player the station type is listed as FM Radio and not as Digital Audio Services, no bitrate is listed. Recordings show the audio bitrate to be AAC LATM (Low Overhead Audio Transport Multiplex) using a bitrate of 133 kbps AAC, except for NRK P3 which uses 163 kbps AAC.
