BBC Director of Radio Helen Boaden has announced the corporation is to run a technical trial of DAB+ later this year.
Speaking at the RadioDaysEurope event, Helen shared stats on digital radio, but said high quality distinctive content will win but we need cheaper conversations for in-car listening.
In UK radio, 20% of listening is in car, 90% of vehicles do not have digital radio. 40% of new cars come with DAB as standard, but 60% don’t.
A DAB+ service will help the BBC find out whether you can get DAB+ in places where you can’t get DAB, Boaden said.
Since returning to radio Helen says she was shocked at the amount of radio she had to watch rather than listen to. “People haven’t given up on listening, they just want to watch as well,” she said.
