Astra 2G has entered service at 28.2° East, taking over a number of satellite TV and radio services from the ageing Eutelsat 28A. For viewers inside the UK spotbeam, the changeover means improved reception on smaller dish sizes.
By the end of the June, Eutelsat 28A should have transferred all of its services to Astra 2F and Astra 2G, which transmit a much stronger signal over the UK and Ireland.
Some channels have remained on the “European spotbeam” during the satellite switch, with good reception over most of Europe.
Other channels have moved from the European spotbeam to the UK spotbeam, resulting in a loss of some channels in fringe reception areas.
Some channels have moved from the UK spotbeam on Astra 2E and Astra 2F to the UK spotbeam on Astra 2G.
As the UK beams on the three satellite are roughly the same, viewers in fringe areas of mainland Europe should see no dramatic changes in reception.
There have been rumours that the reception of some channels, such as ITV HD, has reduced slightly, resulting in a loss of the channel in some areas.
This has not been confirmed, reception tests carried out in Copenhagen on a 150 cm Gibertini dish showed no change in reception on any of the effected transponders, this may not be the case in other areas.
Although there has been no official confirmation from SES about what has moved to Astra 2G, the following transponders have been transferred to Astra 2G:
