Listed below are reception reports for the Astra 2F satellite positioned at 28.2° East. The BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5 all use this satellite to broadcast their channels.
Please remember these are localised reports, reception may vary at your location.
The Astra 2F satellite is copositioned at 28.2° East along with Astra 2E, the satellite is used by the main British public service broadcasters.
The UK Spot beam provides maximum signal (for 45 cm dishes) over the UK and Ireland with a sharp roll-off of signal level outside this region. This enables channels to be broadcast free-to-air, with reception effectively constrained to the British Isles, it is used to provide channels to both the Freesat and Sky satellite platforms.

I had intended to install a metal 1.8, prime focus but in the event it was damaged in transit so instead I have installed a Laminas AS1800 fibre/epoxy antenna (1.93×1.8m offset) with separate C120 x 40mm source and quatro LNB (I lined it up with a standard single output LNB before changing to the quatro LNB but the measured figures were virtually the same for both on the spectrum analyser). Figures for C5 transponder (2F, 10964GHz Hor. Pol. UK Spot) in clear sky this morning were around 10.5dB MER and post Viterbi B.E.R. of 1 in 108. Both Sky+HD and Sky+ receivers were able to decode C5 services (and C4HD which is on 2F). However this was after I had to reduce the gain setting on the Hor. Low and Vert. Low inputs on the multi-switch, which I am using to distribute feeds around the house. It was possible to see on the spectrum analyser that the higher level of the signals (due to the larger dish) on the Euro beams was causing compression to take place in the multi-switch amplifier and this was in turn causing I.M. products which raised the noise floor and made the lower level 2F UK spot beam signals un-decodable. When I reduced the gain, and thus the I.M. products, it could be clearly seen on the analyser that the weaker multiplexes sat up higher above the background noise level. This afternoon we have had quite thick cloud and some light rain but C5 has remained decodable and the Sky+ receiver still shows a C5 signal of good level and reasonable quality on the signal test page. We will await the transfer of further services from 1N to 2E and/or 2F, which I understand is due to take place during Feb. 2014 after 2E arrives on station at 28.2° at the end of this month. |
