Asian TV in Europe

There are millions of Asians living throughout Europe, from Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, the Philippines, Thailand Vietnam and many more.
There are many free-to-air channels available in most areas of Europe catering for the many Asian nationalities scattered throughout the European continent.

For Indians and Pakistanis, most channels are broadcast from the Astra 2 satellites positioned at 28.2° east. This the the primary position for satellite broadcasts for the British Isles.
This is also where the largest communities of Indians and Pakistanis live, so most broadcast from this orbital position.

There are around 1,451,862 residents of Indian, 1,174,983 of Pakistani and 451,529 of Bangladeshi ethnicity, making a total UK South Asian population of 3,078,374 (4.9 per cent of the total population), excluding other Asian groups and people of mixed ethnicity.

South Asian ethnic groups mostly originate from a few select places in South Asia, these are known as place of origins. British Indians tend to originate mainly from the two Indian States, Punjab and Gujarat. The language spoken by Indians are, Punjabi, Gujarati, Kutchi, Hindustani, Bengali, Tamil and Telugu.

Pakistanis tend to originate largely from the Mirpur District in Azad Kashmir. The second largest ethnic group of British Pakistanis are the Punjabi people, largely from Attock District of Punjab followed by pathans and other ethnic groups from the districts of Nowshera, Peshwar and Ghazi in province of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa.
In the London Borough of Waltham Forest there are substantial numbers of Pakistani people originating from Jhelum, Punjab.
People from Pakistan speak Urdu, Punjabi, Mirpuri, Hindko (dialects of Punjabi), Sindhi, Kashmiri, Pashto, and Seraiki.

Around 95 per cent of Bangladeshis in the UK originate from the Sylhet region in the north east of Bangladesh. In Tower Hamlets, people have origins in different zones in the Sylhet region, mainly from Jagannathpur, Beanibazar and Bishwanath. Bangladeshis from Sylhet speak Sylheti and Bengali.

Gujaratis who emigrated from India and East Africa speak Gujarati, Hindi, and Kutchi (a dialect of Sindhi), while a sizeable number of Gujarati Muslims speak Urdu for religious and cultural reasons.

Sri Lankans in the UK refers to people of Sri Lankan heritage, ethnically, they may include Sri Lankan Tamils, Sinhalese people, Burghers, and Sri Lankan Moors. Migration from Sri Lanka to the UK has been a result of historic links between the two countries and the Sri Lankan Civil War. People from Sri Lanka speak Sinhalese and Tamil.

People of Chinese ancestry who reside in the UK, make up one of the largest groups of overseas Chinese in Europe. Most British Chinese are descended from people who were themselves overseas Chinese when they came to Britain.  Most are from former British colonies, such as Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Mauritius.
People from mainland China and Taiwan and their descendants constitute a relatively minor proportion of the British Chinese community.

ChanChannel Snel S is a UK-based, free-to-air television channel targeting the British Bangladeshi community. The channel was established on 16 December 2004, by Mahee Ferdous Jalill – a Bangladeshi businessman in London.The channel claims to be the “Voice of British Bangladeshis across the world”, and its slogan “Working for the community”, broadcasting mainly in Bengali and occasionally in Sylheti, and programmes suiting the community needs.

The television station is based at Prestige House in Walthamstow, North East London.It broadcasts programmes in Bengali, Sylheti and a few in English. It is the first Bangladeshi channel to broadcast content in the Sylheti dialect, it has built up a loyal following among the Bangladeshis in the United Kingdom who the majority come from Sylhet.

Since the launch of the channel in 2004, there has been bitter rivalry between Channel S and Bangla TV, with Channel S gaining rights to broadcast the Baishakhi Mela.
A survey in the UK found Channel S was the most viewed Bengali TV channel in the UK.

NTV is a Bengali language satellite television channel based in Bangladesh. It started operation in 2003. It is one of the most popular Bengali TV channels in the country.
In the anniversary of the channel, the founder expressed interest in creating NTV2.

The channel broadcasts coverage of news, soap operas, educational, religious and politics related programs. NTV is owned by Mosaddek Ali Falu, a leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party.

TVK – Television Khmer

TVK is a public television channel based in Cambodia launched in 1966, the station is broadcast courtesy of the Cambodian Ministry of Information. Upon arrival of the Khmer Rouge in 1975, TVK was temporarily closed down until its grand reopening in 1979 when it adopted its current name, TVK, standing for Television Kampuchea. Later, in 1998.

TVK introduced a new recording studio and more modern equipment, dramatically increasing the quality of its content and helping promote its broadcast offering to compete on the world stage. The chain has since supported TV channels like Canal France International, along with NHK Japan. The station even holds permission to broadcast programming developed by its partner channels, extending its broadcast library with an impressive slate of shows and entertainment.

In 1998, the company, Media Services Limited based out of Singapore was invited to manage the marketing efforts of TVK. A year later, the chain launched into satellite broadcasting across Europe via the Hot Bird satellite. Viewers with access to the satellite can continue to watch TVK for free to this day. Later still in 2009, TVK began to broadcast its own original programming, although it was only from 2015 that TVK became committed to delivering 24/7 broadcasting to viewers in Asian countries. More recently, this 24/7 schedule has been extended to accommodate viewers in Europe and elsewhere.

TVK has a diverse portfolio of programming, with a keen focus on general entertainment, news and information broadcasting, political updates and cultural affairs relating to Khmer culture in particular. News is delivered throughout the day in the form of concise bulletins, along with more in-depth discussions and commentaries. There’s also plenty of more general programming, with music and theatrical based shows, alongside light entertainment programming for everyday viewing.

CCTV-4 中文国际 is a 24-hour Chinese international channel. It is one of six China Central Television channels that broadcasts outside of the People’s Republic of China.

Amongst its programmes are documentaries, music, news, sports, children’s shows, drama, and sports.
It also covers national politics, economy, culture and education. Viewers can opt for entertainment programmes that trace the history of China, exciting series, films, and talk shows.

As well as the regular news, CCTV 4 Europe also features flash information. For those that fancy discovering and learning Mandarin, there are educational programmes covering the basics.
