The Ultra HD Blu-ray format supports a resolution of 3840 x 2160, as well as high dynamic range (HDR) and higher frame rates (up to 60 frames per second).
HDR pictures can be delivered in one of two ways: either using the BDA-developed “BD HDR” section of the new specification or via compatible HDR formats such as Dolby Vision.
The video is encoded under the High-Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) standard, and use 10-bit colour depth and the Rec. 2020 colour space.
As for the Ultra HD Blu-ray discs, the specifications allow for discs in three sizes: 50GB with 82 Mbit/s, 66GB with 108 Mbit/s, and 100GB with 128 Mbit/s.
Ultra HD Blu-ray discs support an optional digital bridge feature, which will allow you to copy Ultra HD Blu-ray content to an external hard disk drive and to portable devices, such as smartphones and tablets.
The Ultra HD Blu-ray format also supports High Dynamic Range (HDR) video. HDR has far more colour and light information in each pixel than standard HD video.
TVs that support HDR can process video signals that contain a much wider, more granular range of information that determines the luminance and hue of a given pixel. Besides having more pixels, each pixel can be much more varied than non-HDR.
The UHD Blu-ray specification includes object-based immersive sound, such as Dolby Atmos and DTS:X, many of the films released on Ultra HD Blu-ray include Dolby Atmos soundtracks.
Both add overhead audio to the standard left/right/centre/rear/surround channels, producing a more immersive sound.
Of course, you will need audio equipment that can handle Dolby Atmos and DTS:X.
Ultra HD Blu-ray Specifications
Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) specified Ultra HD Blu-ray™ format for the 50 GB, 66 GB and 100 GB ROM disc in May 2015.
The Ultra HD Blu-ray™ can support video at 3840 × 2160 (4K/UHD) at up to 60 frames per second progressively and High Dynamic Range (HDR) video.
The table below shows brief physical specifications of Ultra HD Blu-ray™ discs. Dual-Layer (DL) disc of 50 GB & 66 GB and Triple-Layer (TL) disc of 100GB are applied for ROM.
The liner density of 66 GB DL and 100 GB TL ROM disc is the same as that of 100 GB BDXL™. 50GB Ultra HD Blu-ray™ disc cannot be played back by the players designed with Blu-ray Disc™ Read-Only format (2K/HD) specified in Mar. 2011 because of the incompatibility of video coding methods, content protection systems, Disc Information, etc..
Several physical reading speeds are selectable by drive according to content’s required data transfer rate. The allowable Transfer Rate (TR) that are specified for various disc capacity types are as follows:
- For 50 GB disc: 72 Mbps (Low TR option) and 92 Mbps (default TR) are specified.
- For 66 GB & 100 GB disc: 92 Mbps (Low TR option), 123 Mbps (default TR) and 144 Mbps*1 (High TR option) are specified.
Note: *1: A portion of the capacity in the inner radius have same transfer rate as default TR, in order to keep disc rotation speed within 5000 rpm.
