Italy to switch to DVB-T2

All Italians will have to switch to the new DVB-T2 standard by 01 July 2022, according to the timetable included in the government’s latest budget law. The switchover date is in line with the European Union’s plans to free up frequency space in the 700 MHz band for 5G mobile communications by moving digital TV channels to the 470-694 MHz band. Communications regulator Agcom now has until 31 May 2018 to publish the plan for allocating the frequencies, with the transition to DVB-T2 set to begin on 01 January 2020.

The government will also contribute a total of EUR 100 million in funds from 2019 to 2022 to help families adapt obsolete TVs via decoders.

The Italian government’s budgetary committee recently set a reserve price of EUR 2.5 billion in total proceeds from the so-called 5G tenders for spectrum in the 700 MHz, 3.4-3.8 GHz and 26.5-27.5 GHz bands
